Communicable Diseases & Disease Monitoring and Epidemiology

Background Information

The Allen County Health Department is committed to protecting the health and safety of our residents by preventing the spread of communicable diseases.

Disease Monitoring & Epidemiology

The disease monitoring program gathers information on infectious conditions of public health concern from doctors, hospitals, and laboratories.  In Allen County, we also work closely with area schools to track attendance.  Several websites are also monitored for local, national and international trends so that professionals can prepare for potential increases of disease and emerging infections.  In addition, information is also collected on some behaviors that may put people at risk of disease, and on medical procedures such as immunization, which may help prevent disease.

We use this information to detect and control disease outbreaks, treat patients and contacts, and provide education.

Reportable Diseases

The level of urgency and method of reporting varies depending on the disease classification. Please refer to the Reportable Infectious Diseases in Ohio guide on The Ohio Department of Health's website for the most complete and current list.
